I will start this by saying I am not a guest, I was (momentarily) an employee.
So let’s start on my “first” day. I walk all the way to the hotel and as soon as I enter Tyree lets me know training has been rescheduled. I’m obviously (but not visibly—I remained very respectful this time) irritated given it’s an hour walk from town. But hey, it’s a new hotel they are very unorganized so BENEFIT OF DOUBT right? So I respectfully say no problem and walk all the way back home. To his credit, he did offer me a ride but I did not want to inconvenience him (ironic) so I kindly declined and walked home.
Cut to the 2nd, we do some training from 9-4 and are told to come back the next day at 1pm to continue training. Surprise, I walk up there AGIAN only to find out they rescheduled once more. He lets me know they tried calling me to cancel and I check my phone to see I DID miss a call… 15min before I was supposed to show up. So at this point I’m pissed given the blatant lack of consideration shown towards employees (especially so early into employment) and in this moment of heightened emotion my options felt like I could either fully express how ridiculous and inconsiderate they are/have been OR I could say ok and walk away so that is what I did.
He tried calling out however, I continued to walk off bc like I said IN THAT MOMENT if I had to communicate verbally I would have definitely been fired and so I’m thinking (naïvely) that they will understand my frustration given they knew I walked and that we can just “start fresh” on THEIR SECOND LAST MINUTE rescheduling.
Cut to today where I was supposed to go in at 1pm again so I called at 12pm to verify training is actually proceeding and was let know that I essentially walked off the job and was terminated. I explained my frustration, apologized for (somewhat) mishandling the interaction and then literally begged this man to give me a second chance, but he declined. I proceeded to try and highlight the irony in how an employee would never get to just call in on the spot/15 till TWICE without being reprimanded; however, when it’s the boss disregarding the employees who cares right?
Anyway, all this is to say I can acknowledge that walking off was not the appropriate response (despite it being the better of how I WANTED to respond, bc I wanted to tell them about themselves bc if management doesn’t get checked or held accountable in anyway how can you expect your employees to behave better?) however, understand that this is a workplace where management is very unorganized, and immediately displays signs of being inconsiderate regarding their employees.
Another random note, when I was having the conversation with Tyree over the phone he said that I said my walk is 15-20 minutes which I NEVER said so I’m not sure if that was a misunderstanding or him just blatantly lying to downplay the situation. However, my stance stands. Even if I drove, THEY as MANAGEMENT metaphorically speaking slapped me in the face twice via blatant displays of inconsideration and simply expected the brainwashed “oh no problem!” type of response from me. Again, this would never fly if the roles were reversed.
Mind you I was very considerate given it’s a new hotel so not everything is in order. That said, Cobblestone is a chain… not some ma and pa opening up their first hotel. There is no excuse on their part and if I get to be held accountable for my actions, the least I can do is publicly share my experience with them (which I’m sure won’t impact them in any real way anyway) so you can make an informed decision as far as working or staying here.
