MacCallum House Inn - Mendocino, California

We were on a long drive day trip with our dog and decided spontaneously to stay the night near the coast if we managed to find a hotel that has room and would take us for only one night. I thought I would not find anything since it was so last minute. We usually stay at Stanford Inn but they had a two night minimum for the long weekend, so I called MacCallum and I am so glad I did. They had a cancellation so we got a dog-friendly room in the Suites which is about two blocks from the center of town. I recommend that if you walk to bring a flashlight or use the light on your phone because Mendocino gets VERY dark at night and there are no sidewalks so you are sharing the space with cars. Its very safe but be extra safe and give drivers a heads up you are there.

The room was large but cozy, comfortable and warm. We were greeting by a friendly and professional Inn Keeper who gave us a dog bed, bowls and towel for our little dog which was greatly appreciated.

The breakfast at the Inn was delicious and the staff was understaffed I think due to some folks out sick (not a surprise about half of Northern California has a cold or flu at the moment) but they managed to handle it with grace.

I am already looking forward to a return visit.

We have been coming to Mendocino for many years and had always wondered about the MacCallum House for dinner. This time around we decided to try it. To be fair we are seasoned travelers, good home cooks, and are always looking for great food and wine experiences. The potato/leek soup was this weird brown color, not sure why but it was a bit off putting. The seasonal salad was delicious with the pomegranate and candied walnuts. The pork chop entree was a true disappointment. While the pork chop was perfectly cooked the quality of the chop was not that great. The cut had a lot of gristle and fat so the actual edible part was small. We were not that hungry so it was fine, but I would not order it again. The spatzle that it was served with was downright gross. It was dry, in fact so dry that we ordered a side of gravy ($2) to make it edible. I make spatzle at home all the time and would be more than willing to share my recipe with the chef. If the chef wants to stick with his, he should make the side of gravy standard for the dish! The service was good for our table but I felt very sorry for the people behind my husband because their service was so bad that the waiter comped them a dessert. The ice cream is delicious here because it is made in a French style so it is very creamy and rich. Not to be missed!

Went to have dinner here with my mom. What a beautiful place. The service is impeccable and the food... Wow! Really, really good. The top notch attention by our server made it a million times enjoyable!

Attention to details was excellent!

Definitely coming back! Probably one of the best dining experiences in Fort Bragg!

My wife and I stayed here while celebrating our 32nd anniversary and it was simply amazing. Our little cabin was perfect! The property is beautiful and picturesque. Great service throughout our stay. It’s in the heart of town and so easy to walk around and explore. Plus it’s dog friendly! We will return.

My daughter had her wedding here a few weeks ago. Overall, we were very pleased. The food and service were excellent although the menu is a little limited (small inn so understandable). Menus posted online if you’re interested. She stayed in the water tower room and it was beautiful. Very convenient for the ceremony and dinner as well. We rented the South Dining room for 30 guests. It was a bit crowded but worked for us. Maccallum House was very helpful getting everything set up. Wedding was in the gardens. It is gorgeous! Photos online don’t do it justice. A few things I’d change, maybe not do first look in the garden. It’s beautiful but not very private for first look. Don’t order flower arrangements for the garden. Save your money. We spent several hundred dollars on aisle decor/altar arrangements but the garden is so lovely, it completely dwarfed our arrangements. The draping was helpful to tie things together and the bridal party flowers were lovely. Candles and small centerpieces is all we needed in dining room. My daughter and her husband were very pleased. The fried CHICKEN was served to us COMPLETELY RAW. Not a little pink, but completely raw pink flesh! My husband had to bite into it to notice! The waitress apologized but the manager told her we still had to pay for it. PAY FOR RAW CHICKEN! Needless to say I refused. Talk about unprofessional and adding insult to injury. They could have made us seriously ill! We will never be back. On top of it all the rest of our food tasted like old pre-made food you would get at a bad wedding. The steak was barely warm, dried out, and pre sliced.

Our room had 2 problems. 1) the door key didn’t work properly, which the management knew. Several times we had to call the front desk, which was 4 blocks away, to open our door. 2) Our room was not cleaned very well The spreads were thrown on the beds and the bathroom wasn’t cleaned.

I stayed at the suites of Mac Callum house, in the upper part of town. The place, building and views are very beautiful. This is not a cheap place, we are talking $400+ a night. The bedding is simply very very bad and quite frankly unacceptable for this price range. There is no duvet, just polyester sheets (or a cotton mix at best), with one of these brown, old blankets that not even hospitals have anymore. To me and many others bedding and mattress are the most importantly things, so I encourage the hotel to take care of this if they want to charge these prices.
